Synopsis
A Heartwarming Tale of Hope and Sacrifice
The Last Leaf by O. Henry is a deeply emotional story about friendship, hope, and the power of selfless sacrifice.
The story follows two young artists, Sue and Johnsy, living together in Greenwich Village. When Johnsy falls seriously ill with pneumonia, she loses all hope of surviving. Believing that she will die when the last leaf falls from an ivy vine outside her window, she slowly gives up on life.
As the cold autumn winds strip away the leaves one by one, Sue desperately tries to keep her friend hopeful. Meanwhile, an old struggling painter named Behrman learns about Johnsy’s strange belief. On a stormy night, when the final leaf falls, Behrman secretly paints a perfect leaf on the wall to give Johnsy the courage to live.
The next morning, seeing the “last leaf” still hanging on the vine, Johnsy regains her hope and decides to fight for her life. But soon Sue reveals the heartbreaking truth — the leaf was actually Behrman’s masterpiece, painted during the freezing storm that caused him to catch pneumonia and lose his own life.
This touching story beautifully teaches that hope can save lives, and true art is sometimes created through sacrifice.
